Similar to my post on the cost of driving to the coast for surf, here’s a table i put together for estimated fuel cost for driving to shred. The table is organized by a few different gas mileage rates and then by 3 different gas prices.  Figure it out.

Thanks to all the Wall Street and Government dipshits out there gas prices have actually gone down a bit.  Good looking out.

Otter and i had a few days left on the Costa trip.  Rather than stay in Mal Pais, we devised a plan to drive to Samara.

Getting from Mal Pais to Samara during the rainy season (of which we were in the tail end) required driving quite a ways inland and around a little mtn. range rather than driving along the coast.  According to all the locals we talked to the trip would take 3 hours.

Five hours later and three or so sketchy creek crossings, we were in Samara.  It was raining hard and the town was dead.  Waves were tiny and shitty–didn’t bother paddling out.  We got food at a pizza restaurant and while we sat and ate cars started pouring in.  Cars with mtn bikes on em.  Like 20 bikes on top of a van.  There was some 50k bike race the following morning.  The town went from eerie quiet to packed streets in a couple hours.  We bailed quick the following morning as to not get trapped in the Costa Rican bike race frenzy.  Man, even those guys are all about spandex.

Samara was a bust so we headed north for about an hour to Tamarindo.  I was itching to surf …Read the rest of this entry »

I went and checked out That’s it, That’s All last night.  Wow.  The King Cat Theater was waaaay over capacity which wasn’t surprising give the hype machine surrounding this movie.

After waiting in line trying to get in for a while, i bypassed the bar and went straight to the theater to try to find a seat.  T-minus 45 mins and there was pretty much nowhere to sit.

Thats it, Thats All

Ok.  Enough of the whining.  The movie was pretty damn sick.  It was def a T.Rice movie.  If you didn’t endure the high5’s at the KingCat and are planning on buying it, make sure you are watching it on a highDef unit.  The color alone in the movie was insane.  They rip around in choppers through some pretty epic AK and Kiwi zones both of which have dramatic landscapes.

Here’s a summary of the movie:  Big-clean flippy spins, T.Rice, Powder, Goats, and zero rails.

Nice work kid.

After about four days in one place i started getting antsy and decided to bail.  Pavones was hands down the mellowest place we hit on the Costa trip–and leaving when it was overhead didn’t seem right but we bailed anyways.

Alex the taxi guy picked us up at 4am and we b-lined it to the airport in Golfito.  The game plan was to fly back to San Jose, then hop another flight to Tambor and make our way to Mal Pais.  We lucked out and found super cheap flights on Nature Air. The total for both of us on both flights was like $140.  Almost half the price of Sansa.  Stoked.  We got to the airport about 1.5 hours later, checked in.  After checking in the Nature Air dude was like ‘ok, i’ll just need $80 …Read the rest of this entry »

Otter and i just got back from a 2 week stint in Costa Rica.  We caught the tail end of the rainy season in every place we went around the country - Tamarindo, Samara, Santa Teresa/Mal Pais.  We started in Pavones.

We got to San Jose late in the evening 9/22 and posted up at the Hotel Villa Bonita.  The place is affordable but not super cheap, clean and quiet.  We had a flight the next morning at 530 and this place was only 5 minutes from the airport.  Good place to stay if you have connecting flights and a pretty cheap taxi ride.

Our flight to Golfito touched down 45 mins later. Driving would’a taken a good 8 hours.  We figured the $90 flight was worth our time and money.  We then hopped in a taxi and headed to the bus stop but decided to just take the taxi the 1.5 hrs to Pavones after i managed to talk him down a bit in price.  Nice taxi guy named Alex.

At least half the people in Costa Rican country side drive motorcycles rather than cars.  I imagine it’s because they’re cheaper and more maneuverable in the wet season.  On the way to Pavones we saw tons of dudes wearing ponchos flying down the road on motorcycles.  We passed one of em right as he ran over a …Read the rest of this entry »

I quit my job.

In doing so i managed a few weeks of joblessness.  What would YOU do with 2 weeks of no job?  Sit on your ass and relax?  Drink a lot?  Sleep? Surf?  Well that’s what im gonna be doing also.  But it’ll be in beautiful Costa Rica.

Pavones, Costa Rica

A friend and i are heading down in a few days.  The tentative game plan is to hit Pavones for a few days.  Then make the 6+ hour drive up to Dominical then Jaco.  From there we’re gonna con some fisherman to take us over to the Nicoya Peninsula and from there make our way to Mal Pais to hook up with a friend.

We’re running on a loose itinerary which in my opinion is the only way to travel.  The only priority is surf.  Stoked…
