Archive for February, 2008

I was lucky enough to go to Mexico for a little surfing last week. The wife and I were staying in Troncones just north of Ixtapa. There was good weather, and good waves. On the third day I went out for an afternoon session. It was smaller, and the take off point was in the shallows. Set came, and I grabbed my first wave. Heading down the line I notice that water is getting really shallow. I start pumping to make the section. It’s then that I realize it’s not going to happen. So I go to jump into wave to land in some deeper water. Things didn’t go according to plan, and I am grabbed by the lip and thrown into the rocks. I make like a starfish, and lay flat trying to avoid anymore collisions with the rocks. This doesn’t happen and left-side is dragged along the rocks. Suddenly I am stopped when my foot jambs into a rock. I get my head above water, and grab my board and paddle my way into the deeper water. Surveying the damage I have some minor scraps on my left side. But my foot is starting to sting. I had hit a sea urchin when my right foot jambed into the rock. Kelly and I head back to the hotel. Where with a needle, tweezers, and some tequila we remove a dozen of the larger spines. After getting the big ones out it’s decided that the rest will have to be removed in the States. Hobble around the rest of the trip and have a good time lounging by the pool.

When I got home I went to the ER. I got six shots of local anesthetic to numb the site. If anyone has had any shots given to them in their foot they would understand that this is the worst thing ever. This was the most painful part of my whole experience. After I was numb it was all good, and the doctor removed the rest of the spines.

Thought I would share my story. Maybe you will think twice about wearing those stupid little reef booties on your next trip south.

Holy Update!

If you missed the Holy Oly, you clearly have questionable priorities. This years Holy Oly was the best one yet. Sunny, warm, soft, lotta beer and dudes going richter on the QP.

Notables were Wille Yli-Luoma doing huge lofty alley-oop front3’s, Monty Hayes doing huge mcTwists, The White Jesus doing huge methods, some Argentine kid going 15 feet+ out, the snowskaters airing out of athe pipe, and a bunch of other retarded stuff that made the crowd oooh and aaah.

The Holy Oly was so sic this year. Sunny conditions make all the difference. Big ups to Krush and the park crew for building a 28 foot fun monster.

Word, see ya next year.

Friday Feb 8, 2008 - Day 1

Got up at 5am and powered up to Mt Baker–brutal. Made it to the White Salmon Lodge for registration for the Slalom by 8:15. Rode some of the new 12 inches of pow and then headed up to the race start. After doing a side-slip only course inspection, my group Masters started racing around 11am. Everyone i know in my division pretty much made the cut to qualify for the finals on Sunday.

Later in the day the DOT decided the avalanche potential was gonna be too high so they closed the road that night at 10pm and all day on Saturday. Evidently there was some slide path along the highway that was ready to go and could take out the road completely. I’d heard someone say that the avalanche danger was worse than it’s been in 20 years. Damn.

Obviously the ski area was gonna be closed on Saturday too. So what they did with the Slalom was take the top 50% of the Friday finishers for the Sunday finals. Usually what they do is take the top 25% from Friday and the top 25% from Saturday. If you blew it Friday you’re kinda screwed but you get an automatic invite back for next year…not so bad.

Saturday Feb 9, 2008 - Day 2

Closed.

Sunday Feb 10, 2008 - Day 3

The course on Sunday was way different than Friday. The temperatures had gone up and it rained a bunch on Saturday. On top of that they’d gotten a few inches of snow–enough to pretty much fill everything in. The snow was some of the NW’s finest wet, heavy guanch. Good shit. The course was smoother than Friday but waaaaaaay faster. So all the little mini bumps were amplified going that much more fast. Almost everyone in my group went down on at least one run. For how gnarly the course was there was no way i’d go that fast in normal conditions. It was some serious balls out shit.

The Slalom was a blast. Bumped into a ton of people i haven’t seen in a while, met some new shreds, got to ride some pow and drank beer. All in all, an awesome weekend.
